Shopping the independent way in Carnaby

Shopping in Carnaby Carnaby
4 October, 2023 Lifestyle

@carnabylondon is known the world over as a fashion capital and is currently home to over 100 retailers. With a mix of flagship stores, established global brands and independent boutiques from several exciting up-and-coming labels, the area gives fashionistas a genuinely varied choice when procuring new threads.

We’ve hand-picked a few of our current faves from Carnaby Street itself, as well as others from the pretty surrounding cobbled streets, all of which are worthy of your attention during the next session of retail therapy…

Annie’s Ibiza

One of Carnaby’s quirkier boutiques and an alternative to the growing number of large established brands making the area home, peek through the bright orange facade on Newburgh Street for a glimpse of the ever‑changing supply of vintage clothes on display. If you’re looking for something truly unique, individual and one‑off, there is only one place, and that is @anniesibiza.

Each rack is filled with vintage pieces Vogue hails as “perfect for a hedonistic night out”, with the ever-friendly staff on hand to assist with curating the perfect statement outfit.

Hayley Menzies

We’re so glad we stumbled across @hayleymenziesofficial and just had to share our newfound love! Filled with womenswear featuring vibrant designs and some very cool animal prints, this is the place to pick up a piece destined to become a future classic.

Sustainability is at the heart of this brand and we love the look and feel of everything they stock, so head over to their boutique Newburgh Street to see fo yourself, although be warned, as leaving without at least one purchase has proven to be somewhat of a challenge…

Percival

Menswear made easy, that is @percival_menswear, who design everything in their Soho studio using quality materials with the mantra ‘Subverting The Classics’. Their concept is to create a limited amount of apparel, keeping the look fresh and varied whilst selling directly to consumers to keep prices down. Pieces are varied and easy to wear, from urban streetwear through muti-seasonal layering pieces to relaxed tailoring with suits and high-quality outerwear that can be worn in multiple ways, occasions and environments.

One of our favourite independent menswear brands of the moment, as seen on the backs of some high profile types including David & Romeo Beckham, Jeff Goldblum and Gareth Southgate to name a few, we particularly love the hand embroidered t-shirts & sweats, especially the regular collabs with @championeurope including the super fun and super local Scouts of Soho and Soho Sports Club campaigns.

Mind

With the drive toward more sustainable fashion creating a rise in demand for pre-loved clothing, @mindcharity on Ganton Street is Carnaby’s first permanent charity shop. No longer do environmentally-conscious shoppers need to spend hours on end rifling through unordered rails or piles of jumbled attire, as these cherished items are carefully curated like any other fashion boutique. Stock is updated constantly, featuring great quality vintage and designer threads from formal to casual wear, shoes and accessories. Shoppers can browse to their heart’s content, conscious they are lessening their impact on the planet, whilst at the same time contributing towards this high profile and ever-more important mental health charity.

Third Man Records

Okay, so not a fashion brand, but fashion and music go hand in hand and this independent record store is true to the original spirit of swinging Carnaby, being the label set up and run by the legend that is Jack White. It’s no secret we love new music as much as new clothes here at TB_HQ and @thirdmanlondon is a great local spot to sample indie vinyl releases as well as a number of exclusives, this rather conspicuous spot on Marshall Street being the label’s only store outside of the US.

With records, memorabilia and an abundance of generally cool music-related bits ‘n pieces filling the space beneath its bright red ceramic tiled ceiling, a phone box in the corner playing secretive recordings of the label’s founder, plus a small live venue downstairs known as The Blue Basement which hosts occasional intimate gigs, a visit here is a genuine experience beyond just picking up a record or two.
