Mark Wogan Seven Dials
27 May, 2016 Lifestyle

Welcome to TB_HQ’s regular feature offering a view of London from the inspirational folk who make this great city what it is. This time around we get a fantastic insight into the West End from former Groucho Club chef and Co-Founder of Homeslice (our favourite West End pizza joint!) Mark Wogan

A quick introduction

My name’s Mark and I’m one of the co-founders of Homeslice.

Home is?

West London.

Favourite watering hole?

The Draft House on Goodge Street, its got a great selection of craft beers.

Favourite place for everyday eats?

Keu on Poland St, I’m especially partial to the Banh Mi.

Favourite place to eat for a treat?

Dabbous on Whitfield St. (Editorial update – Dabbous has sadly closed its doors, but Ollie Dabbous has opened the fabulous Hide in Piccadilly as its replacement)

Best coffee?

Kaffeine on Great Titchfield Street (is there anywhere else?)

Favourite street (and why)?

I walk along Berwick Street to get to Wells Street most days. It still feels like proper London.

Shop you most frequent (or wish you could)?

Sunspel on Old Compton for T-Shirts, The Circle on Great Marlborough for tattoos (yes I do have them) and Velorution on Great Portland Street, I could buy so many bikes in there.

Your earliest memory of the West End?

Going to the BBC at Portland Place as a kid with my dad.

What, if anything, would make London a better place?

More sunshine. It’s the best place on Earth when the sun shines.

The building/view/piece of architecture that inspires you most?

Looking up Regent Street toward All Souls Church at night. It’s got to be one of the best-lit streets in the world.

What do you miss the most when away from London?

The breadth of food available in London is better than anywhere else (oh, and my bed).

The ultimate place in London to live would be?

The American Ambassador’s house in Regents Park. It used to be Clark Gable’s London home. Amazing.

You only have 24 hours in London, what are your Must Do’s?

Start with a Bacon Naan Roll for breakfast at Dishoom on Kingly Street, then walk to Soho Square for a spot of people watching, always interesting to see the mix of types who congregate there. Lunch at 10 Greek Street followed by a trip to Paul A. Young on Wardour Street for chocolates. For the best sunglasses in London head up to The Eye Company on Wardour again and then stroll over to Fortnum & Mason for afternoon tea. Whilst over that way, hit the London Library in St. James’ Square, you need to be a member but it’s such a hidden gem. As evening draws in, head over to Percy & Founders on the site of the old Middlesex Hospital in Fitzrovia for cocktails and end up at Mac & Wild on Great Titchfield Street for dinner. Finally, wander down Regent Street and look at the lighting, I know I’ve said this already but people tend not to look up when they’re in London and they really should!

Any top secret tips/places you’d like to share?
